Triceratops is a genus of herbivorous dinosaurs in the ornithischian order ceratosaurus. Fossils were found in late cretaceous, which were at Maastricht terraces in North America , about 68 million to 65 million years ago. Triceratops is one of the last dinosaurs to appear and is often used as a representative fossil of the late cretaceous period. There are two valid species: Triceratops horridus and T. prorsus, but other genera have been named as well.
The most distinctive features of triceratops are their horns and shields.Their head shields can grow to more than 1.5 meters long.Triceratops have a horn over its snout, and a pair of horns above its eyes, more than 80 centimeters. Behind the skull there is a relatively short bony head shield.
Although Triceratops are herbivores, they may also have used horns, beaks, and their bodies to knock down higher vegetation for food.Triceratops had a long, narrow beak at the front of its jaw, which was thought to be more suitable for grasping and pulling than for biting.
